Commercial roofing requires experience and knowledge, especially when installing built-up roofs, or BURs. Many commercial properties are built with no or low-slope roofs to accommodate ducting, venting and HVAC systems. BURs also have lower building costs and maintenance then conventional roofing. Because of decreased slope, having a properly installed BUR is crucial.
The simple definition of a built-up roof is felt, or other roof-grade fabrics, that are amalgamated with bitumen, which is then covered with a protective surface. Today bitumen membranes have been modified to make up for the decrease in overall asphalt quality and the modifications afford enhanced protection.
The benefits of BURs are many. It is an exceptionally durable roofing material. Because of the redundant multiple layers of a BUR, it provides superb protection during excessive weather conditions. This type of roof is easily repaired, and when properly installed and maintained, can last decades. Overall BURs save money.
